If you’re a sports radio host criticizing Baker Mayfield, there’s a chance he’s listening and if he is, the Browns star quarterback has no problem firing back.
Colin Cowherd and Baker Mayfield have had a public feud dating back to before last year’s NFL draft, with the Fox Sports Radio host being one of Mayfield’s biggest critics. In what has generally came across as fun back and forth banter, Mayfield has mocked Cowherd’s criticisms, accusing the host of being full of “BS” and most recently, calling him a “donkey” after Colin insulted the Cleveland Browns.
On Friday, Cowherd linked Mayfield for twice being a college walk-on, the Browns for being a laughingstock and their GM for getting fired by Kansas City, prompting Baker’s “donkey” response.
“I wish you would LISTEN before ruining my weekend,” Cowherd responded to Mayfield on Twitter. “I worked very hard on this. Sad. Still hope we are friends despite our differences. Good luck against Tennessee. They are terrible and you guys should win 50-0.”
“Why would I listen to you instead of just reading the quote? That’s exactly what you do when you go on air… skip all the details and important stuff, then go for the irrational opinion for clicks,” Mayfield fired back.
Cowherd isn’t the first media detractor Mayfield has responded to and he probably won’t be the last. Earlier this year, another Fox Sports Radio host, Jason Smith said Baker being the Browns quarterback made their head coaching vacancy less appealing to potential candidates, prompting a Twitter response from Mayfield. Baker has also gone back and forth with ESPN Cleveland contributor, Tony Grossi who said he would be “done” if the Browns selected Mayfield in last year’s NFL Draft.
Baker Mayfield has made it clear he’s willing to call out any media critics, which is what most radio hosts are hopeful of as they solicit attention from the polarizing quarterback’s response.
