Andrew Luck’s unexpected retirement from the NFL last month shocked and frustrated many people who enjoyed watching him play, which also led to some controversial reactions. Troy Aikman came to Luck’s defense against one hot take by his FOX Sports colleague Doug Gottlieb. Earlier this week, Aikman joined Jimmy Traina’s Sports Illustrated Media Podcast to discuss the Twitter exchange
“I felt that Doug’s comments were out of line,” Aikman told Traina. “I didn’t intend for it to be personal with Doug, I know Doug, I’ve been on his show several times. I like the guy, I just don’t think the opinion on what Andrew was dealing with was really reflected the way it should have been.”
Aikman said he’s not too familiar with Twitter, but people were tagging him in Gottlieb’s tweet because he was an NFL quarterback that famously played through injuries. The three-time Super Bowl champion saw Gottlieb’s tweet and it triggered a reaction.
“The tweet’s still up, I don’t know how many people go back, I can’t imagine anybody’s read it since. I don’t know how those things work! I’m not all that well-versed in social media,” Aikman said.
Aikman’s tweet currently has over 490,000 likes and 68,000 retweets, it’s safe to say people have read it since he wrote it.
In terms of whether or not FOX was upset with the profane tweet, Aikman said the company only took issue with his decision to mention FS1. “I will tell you they were great in how they handled it, not because they handled it the way I wanted them to handle it, I think they were very direct with me and honest, and I’ve always respected those kinds of people,” Aikman told Traina. “They respected the fact that I was honest, they did not like that I would say something about the company. I understand that, and I appreciate the way they discussed it with me.”
Credit FOX for being accepting of a high profile employee calling out a high profile colleague. As part of FOX’s lead NFL broadcast team, Aikman works two games a week for the network, on Thursday night and Sunday, paired with his announcing partner since 2001, Joe Buck.
