Baseball analyst, Nelson Figueroa offered his side of the story regarding his abrupt exit from SNY earlier this year. Last week, the former Mets pitcher and SNY analyst joined Julie Stewart-Binks on Fubo Sports Network’s Call it a Night where he discussed his exit among other topics.
“I think basically what it comes down to is, it kind of ran its course,” Figueroa told Stewart-Binks. The former SNY analyst was fired from the network on May 30th after arriving to the studio in a “state not fit to work,” according to the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand.
Figueroa spent four years with SNY, winning four Emmys and hoped year five would bring an increased role at the network. Instead, SNY reduced Figueroa’s on-air responsibilities, promoting Todd Zeile as their new lead studio analyst. In April, SNY game analyst Ron Darling announced a leave of absence for medical reasons. Figueroa was again passed over in favor of Zeile, who helped fill-in while Darling was out.
“I was on a different show and going to have to work almost three times as much to make half as much and it was a very stressful time, I think on all parties,” Figueroa said. “I don’t feel like it was the best fit for me at that point and I think it just kind of ran its course.”
Figueroa didn’t comment on reports of showing up in a “state not fit to work,” but he did paint a picture of an unceremonious divorce. “If you’ve seen Jerry Maguire, I have the goldfish in my house right now, let’s just put it that way,” Figueroa said. The former MLB pitcher was alluding to the scene where an irrational Jerry Maguire removes a goldfish from his office fish tank after abruptly parting ways with his employer.
Call It a Night with Julie Stewart-Binks airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm ET on the Fubo Sports Network.
