Two longtime CBS Sports’ golf analysts will not return to their broadcast team next year. According to Sports Business Journal’s John Ourand, Gary McCord and Peter Kostis won’t be with the network for the start of their PGA Tour coverage in January.
“Gary and Peter have been an important part of our golf coverage for three decades,” CBS told Ourand. “They were both outstanding teammates and we thank them for their significant contributions throughout the years. We wish them both all the best.”
The decision was reportedly made by CBS to not renew both analysts’ contracts. McCord, a former PGA Tour player began his more than three decade tenure with CBS in 1986, notably being banned from covering the Masters in 1994. The broadcaster said the 17th green at Augusta was so fast it seemed to be “bikini-waxed”, also joking that “body bags” were behind the green for players who missed approach shots. Kostis, a golf analyst and instructor, joined the network in 1992 as an on-course reporter.
Kostis emailed a statement to Ourand expressing gratitude to CBS for his time with the network. “As I look to my future, it will most definitely include going back to my teaching roots, completely unfiltered, in some form or fashion [maybe a book], and I’m really excited about that. As well, there are numerous new opportunities for covering golf that are very interesting,” the broadcaster said.
“Finally, I have to say a big thank you to all the announcers I’ve worked with over the years. I believe that the CBS golf announce team is the gold standard. A special shout out to Gary McCord who has been with me every step of the way, (including that infamous 1989 Ryder Cup broadcast team!) and Jim Nantz who has been there for my entire CBS career. To the cameramen, technicians and support staff at CBS I simply say it was a privilege to work alongside you. Bye for now! I’m off to UPS to send some packages!” Kostis added.
CBS Sports next PGA broadcast will be the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January. The network’s PGA Tour contract is set to expire in 2021.
