Outspoken, polarizing, offensive, but not apologetic. The NHL, Sportsnet and Ron MacLean all made sure to apologize on his behalf, but Don Cherry doesn’t feel he said anything worthy of saying ‘sorry.’
During his final appearance on Sportsnet’s Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry alleged immigrants don’t show enough support for the military, based on a lack of people wearing poppies in public.
“I know what I said and I meant it. Still do. Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honour our fallen soldiers,” Cherry told The Canadian Press.
Every year in Canada, from the last Friday in October, leading up to Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, poppies are sold to be worn as pins. Remembrance Day honors the sacrifices made by Canada’s military and the poppies are sold to raise money for veterans.
“You people that come here, whatever it is, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said during his Coach’s Corner segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada, these guys paid the biggest price.”
While Cherry doesn’t feel he needs to apologize, the above comments cost him his job on Sportsnet. Soon after the rant, Sportsnet issued an apology for the remarks and later announced they parted ways with Cherry.
“I could’ve stayed on if I wanted to and knuckled under, and turned into a simp, but that’s not my style,” Cherry said in an interview with Toronto radio station Newstalk 1010. “I’m unemployed now after 38 years. It’s kind of strange to be unemployed, halfway through the season. And of all days Remembrance Day. It’s sad.”
According to Cherry, one of the reasons he will not apologize is because he doesn’t believe “you people that come here” refers to immigrants.
“I did not say minorities, I did not say immigrants. If you watch ‘Coach’s Corner,’ I did not say that. I said ‘everybody.’ And I said ‘you people,'” Cherry told The Canadian Press.
The 85-year old Cherry and former NHL head coach was a longtime contributor to Sportsnet. This was not the first time Cherry made a statement during Hockey Night in Canada that was considered controversial.
