Monday continued an overhaul of CBS Sports’ golf coverage. Following a slew of changes in recent months, the network announced Lance Barrow, longtime coordinating producer of CBS Sports golf will retire after the 2020 season.
“For over 40 years Lance has embodied the tradition and history of CBS Sports golf and set the standard of excellence in golf production,” said Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports. “He is a golf institution and has been a tremendous ambassador of the sport on behalf of CBS Sports. We can’t thank Lance enough for his many contributions.”
Barrow joined CBS Sports as a reporter in 1976 and has filled the coordinating producer role for the network’s golf division since 1997. Taking over for Barrow following the 2020 golf season will be Sellers Shy. Shy is the current producer for CBS’ coverage of the PGA Tour, NFL and NCAA basketball.
“We are excited to elevate Sellers into the lead producer role. He is a highly-respected and accomplished producer, and has great relationships with our announcers, production team and across the golf community,” McManus added. “With his experience and leadership, he is the perfect person to lead our golf production. We look forward to a great season and have no doubt the transition from Lance to Sellers will be seamless.”
It’s the latest change for the network as they work to retool their golf coverage. In recent months CBS Sports has parted ways with golf analysts Gary McCord and Peter Kostis, while bringing in Davis Love III, Frank Nobilo and Michelle Wie.
The personnel changes come as the network nears a new rights agreement with the PGA Tour. According to John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal, the Tour is closing in on new deals with CBS and NBC.
The current network agreements were set to expire in 2021, with the now soon to be signed partnerships extending from 2022-2030. Ourand also reports the PGA Tour could see nearly $700 million per year from their next set of rights agreements, an uptick from the previous deals which were worth around $400 million.
