Less than a week before the College Football Playoff National Championship kicks off, ESPN announced their MegaCast coverage which includes 15 total presentations of the game. Defending National Champion, No.3 Clemson will take on No.1 LSU, Monday Jan. 13 at 8pm ET from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
Their traditional broadcast features Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit on the call for their sixth consecutive National Championship game, joined by Maria Taylor on the sideline covering Clemson and Tom Rinaldi for LSU.
New to this year’s MegaCast will be Refcast, a Bristol-based production available on the ESPN App. Former NFL referee John Parry will be joined by Matt Austin (former SEC referee) and Judson Howard (Pac-12 replay official) to give unique analysis and reaction to the game. Rules analyst Bill Lemonnier will be in the booth for ESPN’s main broadcast, available as needed.
Additional coverage will again include Field Pass on ESPN2 as Adam Amin and Steve Levy provide commentary from the sidelines, joined by other analysts and celebrity guests. After skipping Coaches Film Room in 2019, the unique broadcast returns to ESPNU for this year’s MegaCast. Featured coaches will be named later this week.
The Command Center is a split-screen simulcast on ESPN Classic, providing the audience with the main ESPN camera angle, the SkyCam view and camera feeds dedicated to both head coaches.
In their press release ESPN stated approximately 100 cameras and microphones will be placed throughout the Superdome which will enhance their Sounds of the Game telecast. Airing on ESPN Classic, commentators are removed, giving viewers the feel of sitting inside the stadium.
“The College Football Playoff National Championship is the pinnacle of our college football season,” said senior vice president of production Lee Fitting. “This one telecast is a blend of our best technology and innovation, providing viewers an experience that is befitting to the magnitude of the game. I couldn’t be more proud of our entire team’s work, from commentators to reporters, producers, technical staff, operations and more, in preparing to showcase the game to the world.”
