Cubs Reveal Shows, Talent For Marquee Sports Network

The Chicago Cubs revealed their plans for the Marquee Sports Network this weekend at the annual Cubs Convention. The network doesn’t yet have clearance on several cable and satellite systems, but the team is hoping that will change now that it has revealed the network’s offerings.

Len Kasper and Jim Deshaies will still be in the broadcast booth for the Cubs. They have been with the team since 2005 and 2013 respectively.

There are two new additions coming to Cubs broadcasts. Cole Wright will be the Marquee Sports Network’s studio host. He joins the network from the NFL Network, where he hosted the GameDay Highlights package. Taylor McGregor will be the field reporter. She previously served in the same role for the Colorado Rockies and on ESPN’s college football broadcasts.

Several former Cubs were announced as analysts for the network. They include Ryan Dempster, Mark DeRosa, Lou Piniella, Dan Plesac, Doug Glanville, Jason Hammel, Carlos Peña, and Rick Sutcliffe. Most will be color commentators. Some will also be in the studio.

FOX’s Chris Meyers has also been revealed as part of the Marquee family. He will handle some play-by-play duties for the network.

The Cubs also revealed some other programming offerings for the Marquee Sports Network over the weekend. Most of it looks similar to other team-owned networks. Marquee will offer a show similar to HBO’s Hard Knocks called Cubs All Access. There will also be documentaries on several of the organization’s ex-players and managers.

Marquee has still not been cleared by Comcast. The cable provider reaches 1.5 million homes in the Chicagoland area. Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney told fans that they could expect the Marquee Sports Network to be on all streaming services before the season begins.

UNLV To Air Games on New TV Network

UNLV sports will begin to appear on the Silver State Sports & Entertainment Network beginning this season.

In the world of expanding television rights and continued attempts to get collegiate sports broadcast on television, UNLV sports has a new way to get their athletics to viewers in the Las Vegas area.

UNLV sports will begin to appear on the Silver State Sports & Entertainment Network beginning this season. The network is a creation of KVVU-TV, Leas Vegas‘ FOX affiliate.

The network will concentrate on sports other than football and men’s basketball, but will air select football and men’s basketball games that are not picked up by network TV. The network plans to air more than 100 UNLV home contests.

“I think it’s great for our exposure, especially for many of our Olympic sports that haven’t had a broadcast avenue outside of streaming,” women’s basketball coach Lindy La Rocque said. “The UNLV fans who live in Vegas now have an easy way to follow along when they can’t physically make it to a game. And I think we’ll pick up some new fans, who may have only seen football or men’s hoops before, to be proud of what our teams accomplish.”

“So we’re giving air time to sports that usually don’t get it,” KVVU vice president and general manager Michael Korr said.

The network, which launched in mid-June, will also air 12 games involving historically Black colleges and universities.

Mike Uva Joins WBZ-TV in Boston, Will Still Cover South Carolina Sports

Mike Uva has accepted a position with WBZ-TV in Boston. There he will freelance as a sports reporter to cover the New England Patriots this season.

Uva is the Director of Digital Content with GamecockCentral.com in Columbia, South Carolina. He addressed the issue of trying to do both in a tweet saying that the nature of his position at WBZ will allow him to remain with both outlets.

“Boston, I’m home. I’ve accepted a freelance sports reporter position at WBZ-TV, CBS Boston, to cover the New England Patriots this season. Since this is a freelance gig, with the blessing of both WBZ & Gamecock Central, I’ll remain covering the Gamecocks remotely this fall.”

Uva is from Boston and played college football at Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Fox Charging $250,000 For Field of Dreams Game Ads

The revelation from Ourand comes a day after Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said the network was planning “record pricing” for its upcoming Super Bowl in February of 2023.

For the second consecutive year, Major League Baseball is playing a regular season game at the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa. And the 2022 edition has proved to be a lucrative one for Fox.

John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reports Fox has secured more revenue for this year’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds than any other regular season game on the network. Ourand also revealed commercials sold for $250,000 each.

The revelation from Ourand comes a day after Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said the network was planning “record pricing” for its upcoming Super Bowl in February of 2023. NBC sold commercials for $7 million during Super Bowl LVI.

Also, per a report from the Des Moines Register, the game will not be held in 2023, as the site develops a complex for youth baseball and softball fields. Baseball Hall of Famer Frank Thomas is part of the ownership group of the site and said “It’s a lot going on. They don’t want to come back if the stadium’s not prepared.”
