Spotify acquired exclusive rights to one of the most popular podcasts in the world as The Joe Rogan Experience will join the digital media service starting Sept. 1.
In the announcement, Rogan emphasized that the podcast will remain free. His full library of shows will be available on Spotify starting Sept. 1 and will remain on other platforms until sometime late this year, when the audio and video will then become exclusive to Spotify.
“It will be the exact same show, I am not going to be an employee of Spotify, I’m gonna be working with the same crew doing the exact same show. The only difference will be it will now be available on the largest audio platform in the world. Nothing else will change, it will be free,” Rogan said on Instagram.
While official terms were not released, an undisclosed source told The Wall Street Journal, Rogan’s deal with Spotify is worth more than $100 million. The massive multi-year agreement depicts a continued push from Spotify to make podcasting a focus of the platform, having already acquired The Ringer for nearly $200 million earlier this year.
“Rogan brings his sensibilities as a stand-up comic to the show, and alongside dynamic and diverse guests, he fearlessly broaches far-ranging topics including neuroscience, sports, comedy, health, infectious disease, and our ever-changing culture—all with a mix of curiosity and humor,” Spotify said in a press release.
Rogan’s show launched in 2009 and reportedly averaged 190 million downloads per month in 2019, which would equate to more than 2 billion downloads for the year. Currently, The Joe Rogan Experience ranks as the No. 2 most popular show on Apple Podcasts, behind Barstool’s Call Her Daddy amid recent controversy between its hosts.
