Former ESPN broadcaster Jemele Hill is returning to television with the announcement of her new weekly show coming to Vice TV later this summer. According to Variety, Hill will partner with her friend and former ESPN colleague Cari Champion for the new project.
Hill was removed from the 6pm SportsCenter and parted ways with ESPN in February 2018 following what was at times a turbulent tenure with the network. Near the end of her more than decade long run with ESPN, Hill used her personal Twitter account to comment on political issues, calling President Trump a “bigot,” “white supremacist” and “unfit to be president.”
Titled Disruptors with Jemele Hill and Cari Champion, their new show on Vice TV will welcome discussions from a variety of topics including, sports, business, culture and politics. The show will debut later this summer with eight episodes.
“Sports is intertwined with politics,” Champion told Variety. And while there’s a percentage of the audience who yells “stick to sports,” it won’t cause Vice to limit the show’s topicality.
“We’re about courageous storytelling,” Vice GM Morgan Hertzan said. “And now more than ever, it’s critical we hear from brave voices like Cari and Jemele’s for their take on the most important stories of the day.”
Champion departed ESPN in January of this year, after originally joining the network in 2012 as host of First Take with Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. In July 2015, Champion became a SportsCenter anchor and began her first stint hosting Coast to Coast the following February. The longtime ESPN personality also had a tenure hosting SportsNation, replacing Michelle Beadle on the show in 2018.
