Ian Pannell has a new position with ABC News as the company announced the senior foreign correspondent has been promoted to chief foreign correspondent, leading the news division’s on-air foreign coverage.

“Throughout his storied, 30-plus-year career as a journalist, Ian has been on the frontlines covering some of the most important and compelling stories across the world,” ABC News president Kim Godwin wrote in an internal staff memo on Wednesday.

“As Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, Ian reported from Kyiv as the first missile strikes hit and has spent months on the ground there documenting the tragic developments and the devastating impact on the people inside the country.”

Pannell joined ABC News in June 2017 following a 25-year tenure at the BBC; since then, he has covered various events for ABC in his five years with the network. 

He has reported on the U.S.’ withdrawal from Afghanistan, the battle against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, the fight to retake Mosul, the killing of U.S. soldiers in Niger, the Covid-19 pandemic in Mexico, and the fight and famine in Yemen.

“Despite difficult and often dangerous situations, Ian continues to deliver powerful reporting, often setting the tone and pace for our international breaking news and ongoing coverage,” Godwin added. 

“I look forward to continued excellence from Ian and the entire foreign news team, led by Katie Den Daas and Kirit Radia.”

NBC News chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel is honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) for his achievements and contributions to broadcast journalism, per TV Newser. 

Engel will receive the 2022 John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award at the RDNA22 awards ceremony and reception on Sept. 15 in Indianapolis.

“Richard Engel is on the front lines of history and helps to humanize the most important events in the world,” RTDNA President and CEO Dan Shelley said. 

“His work sets an important standard for journalism, and viewers around the world are better for it.”

The John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award is named after the RTDNA founder and its first president. The Award acknowledges an individual’s contributions to the journalism profession and freedom of the press.

“Richard Engel regularly puts himself in harm’s way to show the world the dangerous reality of conflict zones,” RTDNA Nominating Committee Chair Andrea Stahlman said.

“His courage and dedication are an inspiration to every journalist who seeks to report the truth, no matter how difficult it can be at times.”

Fox News lost one of its original hosts as Uma Pemmaraju died at 64. In Oct. 1996, she was one of a handful of anchors who helped launch the network. 

Over Pemmaraju’s stint with the company, she anchored news shows such as Fox News Now, Fox On Trends, weekend editions of Fox News Live, and The Fox Report.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Uma Pemmaraju, who was one of Fox News Channel’s founding anchors and was on the air the day we launched,” Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott said in a statement to FoxNews.com on Tuesday. 

“Uma was an incredibly talented journalist as well as a warm and lovely person, best known for her kindness to everyone she worked with. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her entire family.”

Throughout her career, Pemmaraju received numerous Emmy awards for her reporting and investigative journalism. 

In addition, she received the Texas AP Award for reporting, The Woman of Achievement Award from the Big Sisters Organization of America, and the Matrix Award from Women in Communications.
