The NFL recently signed new TV deals with Fox and CBS that will go into effect for the 2023 season, but the way those packages will be made up is changing.

With Fox airing NFC games and CBS airing AFC, the networks will get to choose which teams from their respective conference they’d like to show and how many times, as first reported by Sports Business Journal.

SBJ noted, “Starting in ’23, Fox and CBS will identify a specific number of teams that it wants to carry for a specific minimum of games. It is not known how many teams or games are part of this process, which will occur at some point before the official schedule release.”

We will no longer see the standard of Fox getting interconference and road NFC games and CBS getting interconference and road AFC games. SBJ reports, “Under the new deal, those designations will be stripped away, essentially making all 272 games free agents.”

There is still quite a bit to learn about how these packages are going to work, but Awful Announcing’s Joe Lucia made a good point, wondering if this will work similarly to the Big Ten’s arrangement with Fox and ESPN. That agreement allows each network to essentially “draft” games for the season.
