The 2020 Olympics are going to have a broadcast twist geared towards gamers. NBC Olympics and Twitch, the interactive live streaming service, have partnered on live content housed on a new NBC Olympics Twitch channel leading into and throughout the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Twitch on innovative ways to tell the stories of Team USA’s athletes in Tokyo and build Olympic excitement with their audience,” said NBC Olympics President Gary Zenkel. “The Olympic Games are perfectly aligned with Twitch consumers, who are passionate about great competition, personality, and storytelling. We can’t wait to bring the unmatched moments and stories of the Olympics to Twitch’s interactive community.”
The channel will feature studio shows, interviews, and competitions aimed at Twitch’s large audience of gaming enthusiasts. The first one starts the week leading into the Olympics. Creators on Twitch will use their communities to “help” carry the torch to the cauldron lighting at the opening ceremonies. All by collecting items on the live stream and chatting to help “fan the flame” to the finish line.
“The Olympics present an opportunity for a global fan base to embrace this new world of live and interactive sports,” said Chief Content Officer at Twitch Michael Aragon. “We are thrilled to partner with NBC to give fans in the United States an intimate, front row seat to this iconic sporting event and connect American athletes and fans in a way that can only happen on Twitch.”
Once the games begin expect plenty of content from the new NBC Olympics Twitch channel. The platform has four planned options right now: Daily Interactive Clip Show, Daily Competition, Primetime Sidecasting, and Live From Tokyo.
NBC is leading the sales process for this new avenue covering one of their most valuable sports properties, marking another step in the melding of old and new media. The Tokyo Olympics begin with the Opening Ceremony on July 23.
