Mike Golic sat down with The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch yesterday to discuss what he’s been up to since leaving ESPN.

One of Golic’s main gigs has been appearing on Jon “Stugotz” Weiner’s podcast: STUpodity.  Golic explained the differences that come from doing both podcasting and radio.

“I did radio for a couple of decades, and you understand you can’t swear. You just don’t. Right now, I’m doing podcasts, but I still do radio hits. On the podcast, we obviously swear a little bit. Then I have to think, “OK, I’m now on radio and I can’t do that.” So that’s been kind of weird.”

While keeping tabs on which platform he’s on has presented its challenges, Golic said he enjoys getting to work with close friends.

He also revealed that at one point after Mike Greenberg left ESPN Radio, there was a real chance the new morning show on the network could have been Golic & Stugotz instead of Golic & Wingo.

“Stu and I have always wanted to work together. When there was going to be a new (ESPN Radio) morning show, Stu and Jason Fitz were in the running for Trey’s spot. It was going to me and my son and either Trey or Stu or Jason. Stu and my son Mike have done podcasts together as well. Let me just say this: Stu and I are going to be working together a lot. It’s going to be a lot of fun, and I’ll let you know when all that’s going on.”

Along with the podcast, Golic has done a couple other jobs analyzing college football and the NFL and says he enjoys listening to his son’s (Mike Golic Jr.) daily radio show.

Chicago sports fans and longtime listeners of 670 The Score are still processing the death of veteran overnight host Les Grobstein, who passed away on Sunday.

Grobstein was laid to rest on Thursday and his family gave permission for the Score to replay the funeral service during what would’ve been his regular shift.

For those who missed the show or would like to listen again, audio of the service has been posted online. “A Final Goodbye to Les ‘The Grobber’ Grobstein” from Score Overnight is also available on the Audacy website and app, in addition to podcast.

Among those who spoke at the funeral were The Score’s operations director, Mitch Rosen, who knew Grobstein for 30 years and had some poignant thoughts to share on the power overnight radio has with listeners and the bond a host forms with his or her audience.

“What I believe the legacy of Les will be is the thousands of people who considered Les a friend, a companion, or just somebody to keep them company in the middle of the night,” said Rosen.

“Friendship is defined by a mutual relationship. But in this case, it was really a one-way relationship. He was a friend to so many; that is what late-night radio and overnight radio really is. Whether you were a first responder, a third-shift worker, a person who couldn’t sleep, or someone who had to get up to go to the bathroom and had trouble going back to sleep, Les was always there for people.”

Rosen went on to name several regular listeners who often called in to contribute, spending part of their late nights with Grobstein’s five-hour show. With its 50,000-watt blowtorch, The Score reached beyond the Chiago area, across the United States and into Canada.

“So as we say goodbye to the legend,” Rosen added, “let’s remember all the people that never met Les, like all of us, but considered him a great friend through the power of radio.”

Major League Soccer is coming to Charlotte, and the city’s heritage sports talk brand is going to be a big part of it. Charlotte FC announced today that WFNZ will be its English-language radio partner for the club’s inaugural season.

WFNZ will carry most of the club’s games. Other games will be heard on sister station Mix 107.9.

The deal also includes coverage of the team. Head coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez, team president Nick Kelly, and Charlotte FC players will all make appearances on the station and remote broadcasts will originate from WFNZ’s Dog House before Charlotte FC home games.

“Our team at Radio One Charlotte is thrilled to bring the passion of Charlotte FC to Sports Radio WFNZ,” Marsha Landess, Regional VP, said in a press release. “With the growing excitement of professional soccer that’s evident in Charlotte, we look forward to a long successful partnership and are glad that we are a part of this historical time in Charlotte sports.”

Charlotte FC is also expected to name a Spanish-language radio partner. That announcement will come at another time.
