The Urban Meyer experiment in Jacksonville just hasn’t worked. The Jaguars remain one of the worst-performing teams and worst-run organizations in the NFL. Things don’t appear to be getting better anytime soon.
Meyer found himself engulfed in a scandal earlier this season, and since then, reports have abounded that the players in the locker room have turned on the former Ohio State coach.
Now things have trickled over into Meyer’s relationship with the media. He’s been pressed with multiple questions trying to get him to react to rumors and reports that players have been leaking the in-house drama. Urban Meyer hasn’t reacted, and things have become contentious.
Jonas Knox, Brady Quinn and LaVar Arrington offered reactions to the whole situation on FOX Sports Radio on Monday morning.
“The media never gave him a chance, and then now you’ve got coaches trying to go for a life vest, and they’re trying to jump off this ship,” Quinn said on 2 Pros and a Cup of Joe. He noted that it seems like media members in Jacksonville have had an ax to grind against Meyer, presumably over a lack of access, and that they had it out for him from the very beginning.
Quinn could be reacting objectively to what he sees happening. Of course, he and Meyer worked together on the first two seasons of FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff. It is not outside the realm of possibility that he doesn’t like the way his friend is being treated.
“Urban Meyer is at a crossroads of sorts already in his early career as a head coach in the pros, and that is understanding the rules of engagement of how people will use self-preservation in the best interest of their own agendas,” Arrington added.
