How does the Washington Admirals sound to you?
The Washington Football Team is set to reveal its new name in February, but football fans in New York didn’t have to wait that long to learn the new moniker. Boomer Esiason let slip that the team formerly known as the Redskins will be called the Admirals beginning in the 2022 season.
On the Wednesday edition of Boomer & Gio on WFAN, Jerry Recco brought up the timeline for the team’s name reveal. Esiason then shouted out “Admirals!” When pressed for details, specifically, was this a guess or did he know for a fact that the team would be named the Washington Admirals, the former QB said “I’m reporting it’s the Admirals.”
Those watching the show on CBS Sports Network could see that Esiason had second thoughts about whether or not he should have said anything. Gregg Giannotti even asked if Boomer wished he could take that back.
That was the moment Boomer Esiason’s tone changed. He went from coy to unapologetic.
“Why? I can’t stand that organization anyway! Who cares, the organization sucks!” he said before listing all of the recent negative headlines surrounding the team.
After years of calls for the Redskins name to be retired, owner Daniel Snyder finally relented before the 2020 season. Many were skeptical about the timing of the decision, given that it coincided with the release of the Washington Post story that set the league’s investigation of the team in motion.
While Boomer Esiason is likely well-sourced within the league, Gregg Giannotti found a little more evidence to back up his partner’s claim. He revealed that for a brief period of time on Tuesday, typing WashingtonAdmirals.com into the search bar of your preferred web browser sent you to the Washington Football Team’s official website.
