Duke faces Syracuse in men’s basketball Saturday as part of the Mike Krzyzewski farewell tour during his final season on the Blue Devils’ sideline.
To have some fun, Coach K called into Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim’s radio show on WTKW 99.5 FM (and TuneIn Radio) Thursday night as “Mike from Durham,” a “long-time listener and occasional caller.”
“Yeah, I’ve been a fan of Coach Boeheim for almost five decades,” said “Mike from Durham,” whom Boeheim recognized right away and laughed.
“I’m gonna have a chance to watch the Syracuse-Duke game this weekend,” “Mike” continued. “I was wondering if there was an opportunity to meet him and maybe get an autograph and a picture.”
“I’m gonna meet you, but I’m not giving you an autograph or a picture,” said Boeheim. “I’d have to charge you my rate; I don’t know if you can afford that.”
“Well, your NIL is probably the highest of any college coach,” “Mike” said. To which Boeheim responded, “I’m hot on Cameo. I’m very hot.”
Host Matt Park then revealed that “Mike” was Mike Krzyzewski, in case anyone didn’t already figure that out from Coach K’s distinct voice and Boeheim’s amused demeanor.
Krzyzewski lamented the heavy snow forecast for the weekend, wondering how Boeheim somehow always manages for snow to come in when the Blue Devils visit Syracuse. Coach K mentioned that he was bringing his wife and grandchildren for the trip, since it’s his last visit to Syracuse.
The two legendary coaches first faced one another in 1989 as part of the ACC-Big East Challenge with the No. 1 Orange defeating Duke, 78-76. Boeheim and Krzyzewski opposed each other again during the 1998 NCAA Tournament, with the Blue Devils winning, 80-67.
Syracuse joined the ACC in 2013, meaning the two schools played twice a season. The Orange hasn’t had much success against Duke, compiling a 4-10 record. Syracuse has lost its past five games versus the Blue Devils. Will it be six after Saturday with Coach K winning the final match-up?
