Chris Licht Officially Named Chairman and CEO of CNN Global

After a report over the weekend surfaced that CNN would name Chris Licht their new president to replace the outgoing Jeff Zucker, the move was made official on Monday morning. 

Discovery, Inc. made it official, announcing Licht as the new chairman and CEO of CNN Global, per Adweek. The appointment will be effective after WarnerMedia completes its merger with Discovery, expected in the early second quarter.

“I have known and admired Chris for more than 15 years and strongly believe he is the best person to lead CNN Global as part of Warner Bros. Discovery,” Discovery CEO and incoming CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery David Zaslav said in a statement.

“Chris is a dynamic and creative producer, an engaging and thoughtful journalist, and a true news person. He has more than two decades of broadcast experience across local, cable and national news. He has been in the field, in the control room and on the set. He is a highly principled individual who is trusted, hard-working and makes every organization stronger, more innovative, and more cohesive.”

Licht has more than 20 years of experience in the television news business. Furthermore, he currently acts as the EVP of special programming at CBS and executive producer and showrunner for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“I’m honored to have this opportunity, especially at such an important time for our country and the world,’’ Licht said. 

“CNN has a rich and storied legacy and I both promise to uphold it and build upon it. I am eternally grateful to Stephen Colbert and the peerless Late Show team for an unforgettable run. I am looking forward to returning to my journalism roots.”

CNN Announces Docuseries Spotlighting the Watergate Scandal

CNN’s docuseries will be told firsthand by John Dean, former White House Counsel to President Richard Nixon, in the CNN Original Series, “Watergate: Blueprint for a Scandal.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Watergate Scandal, and CNN announced that it would reexamine the affair and the anatomy of the infamous break-in that started it all. 

CNN’s docuseries will be told firsthand by John Dean, former White House Counsel to President Richard Nixon, in the CNN Original Series, “Watergate: Blueprint for a Scandal.”

The four-part series will air over two consecutive weekends, premiering with two episodes on Sunday, June 5 at 9 pm ET/PT on CNN.

“Watergate is the reference point for all presidencies about abuse of power and John Dean’s personal account takes our understanding of this important moment in our political history to a new level,” Amy Entelis, EVP for Talent & Content Development, CNN Worldwide, said.  

“Our historical CNN Original Series continue to fascinate our audiences, providing a new lens through which to view current events.”

Watergate: Blueprint for a Scandal” takes a look inside Nixon’s inner circle and the strategies behind closed doors by the Committee to Re-Elect the President that would ultimately unravel his presidency. 

In the four revealing episodes, Dean discloses more than he ever could under oath, alleviating new light on the back-channeling, the back-pedaling, and the backstabbing in this scandal. 

“After passage of a half-century, we have the complete record of what happened during Watergate and this series is more than a cautionary tale about these events,” John Dean, Executive Producer, said. 

“The criminal conduct of Richard Nixon and his top aides was found to be totally unacceptable to the American people and became the blueprint for what no President of the United States should do. This history is highly relevant once again, and it is a risk to our democracy to ignore it.”

CNN to Premiere Documentary on the Life of Julia Child

The documentary honors the life and career of chef, cookbook author, and television and cultural pioneer Julia Child.

Academy Award-nominated filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West will premiere their documentary “Julia” for television on CNN on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm Eastern (5:00 pm and 7:00 pm Pacific). 

The documentary honors the life and career of chef, cookbook author, and television and cultural pioneer Julia Child. Furthermore, the film uses excerpts from the personal diaries of Julia McWilliams and Paul Child to reveal their courtship and early marital adventures. 

“Julia Child was an irresistible subject,” filmmakers Betsy West and Julie Cohen said, “and not just because of her charismatic, joie-de-vivre personality and crying-out-for-imitation voice.”

“As a cookbook author and television chef, Julia had a profound impact on the way Americans think about food, about television, and about the possibilities for women.”

The documentary also follows the Child family through Paul’s foreign service assignments to Germany, Norway, and France, where she trained at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu cooking school.

Also, the film examines Child’s nearly ten-year effort of testing recipes and swapping notes with two friends who conveyed her love of French food.

“Julia Child was a muse to so many of us who remember her hundreds of television appearances through the decades,” Amy Entelis, executive vice president for talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, said.

“We hope viewers will be delighted to discover – or rediscover – a woman who defied all expectations, pursued her passions, and soared in midlife, particularly in a field considered to be a mostly male bastion.”

Symone Sanders’ Show on MSNBC Not off to a Good Start

The former spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris, Symone Sanders, will have to make some improvements on her new show with MSNBC. 

This past weekend, “Symone” made its debut, and the New York Post relayed the Nielsen ratings, and they aren’t good. Sanders attracted just 361,000 total viewers for the 4 p.m. slot of her show on Saturday.

Furthermore, Sanders also attracted just 29,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic. The former Biden administration spokesperson’s debut show featured an interview with First Lady Jill Biden, and it wasn’t enough to lift numbers. 

It will be interesting to see how MSNBC and Sanders look to bounce back from these debut numbers, but she doesn’t plan to put out content that will serve as a mouthpiece for the administration despite being a former employee. 

“I’m not here to be a spokesperson for the Biden administration,” Sanders said last week. “I’m going to be honest, and sometimes the honesty means that what I have to say is not what the administration would have to say. And that’s fine because it’s my show.”
