White House press secretary Jen Psaki is heading to MSNBC when she exits the Biden Administration in May. Nonetheless, Psaki might not be welcomed with open arms when she arrives at the network.
According to CNN’s Oliver Darcy, NBC News journalists are concerned and have voiced dissatisfaction to network executives about MSNBC’s intention to hire Psaki.
Noah Oppenheim, the NBC News president, held an impromptu phone call last week to address the issue with vexed staffers from the Washington bureau. Some have complained to their bosses that the tentative hiring stains the NBC News brand.
Psaki’s tentative agreement with MSNBC concerned staffers because news of the discussion between her and the network came while she is still in her position as White House press secretary.
“Here’s what he was saying: They have perspective programming. This was done on the perspective programming side. Not anything that reflects on NBC News,” a source, who was on the call, explained.
“People wanted answers on what NBC’s role was in this, and NBC News had no role in this,” the source added. “This is MSNBC’s perspective programming.”
Despite the call to calm the anger from its staff, Oppenheim hasn’t completely stamped out the frustration among NBC News journalists, the people who spoke to CNN said.
Last weekend, Fox News White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich shared her information about Psaki’s negotiations, stating it was a bidding war between CNN and MSNBC.
“So we have confirmed, from a source familiar with the situation, that Jen Psaki will be leaving her post here at the White House in the coming weeks. Sometime this spring, she’s going to be taking a job at MSNBC,” Heinrich said. “I was told that there was a bidding war between CNN and MSNBC to get her on board.”
